Donor solicitation strategy & budget redesign for art nonprofit
Challenge
Develop a more formal annual budget and improve the donation solicitation process to appeal to a younger demographic.
The client was a small non-profit specializing in local educational and artistic community enterprises. Due to their small, volunteer-based board, antiquated budgeting system, and the untimely departure of their treasurer, our client wanted to revamp their budget to better manage their finances. Additionally, the pandemic interrupted much of their programming and, as such, they tasked Alhambra with drafting a business recovery and growth program.
Our Approach
Identify comparable non-profit organizational trends and tailor a business strategy plan to the specific needs of the client.
Alhambra’s first step was to research precedent elements of the donor solicitation process in nonprofit organizations. At the outset of our work, the client relied on an aging donor demographic that donated on a yearly basis. To appeal to a younger generation of donors, our team recommended a strategic overhaul of the donor experience. This recommendation spanned four categories: 1) digital donor identification, 2) engagement, 3) retention, and 4) alternative models. Next, the team drafted a sample budget based on historical financial statements and provided growth strategies for three of the client’s key events to boost participation and reach.
Impact
Alhambra provided a donor solicitation revamp strategy, a sample budget, and business strategies for three of the client’s main annual events.
- Recommended a four-fold donor solicitation strategy aimed at increasing donations from a younger demographic.
- Provided a detailed research write-up for each segment of the strategy which the client has begun implementing.
- Devised the first sample formal budget and strategic recommendations for the client’s large annual art events built around the client’s small board and short bandwidth for implementing large projects.
